If we simply preach the effects of redemption in the human life instead of the revealed, divine truth regarding Jesus Himself, the result is not new birth in those who listen. The result is {only} a refined religious lifestyle . . . we must make sure that we are living in such harmony with God that as we proclaim His truth He can create in others those things which He alone can do.
Oswald ChambersThere is nothing to be valued more highly than to have people praying for us; God links up His power in answer to their prayers.
Oswald ChambersGet alone with Jesus and either tell Him that you do not want sin to die out in you - or else tell Him that at all costs you want to be identified with His death.
Oswald ChambersIf we rely on the Holy Spirit, we shall find that our prayers become more and more inarticulate; and when they are inarticulate, reverence grows deeper and deeper.
Oswald ChambersPrayer is simple, prayer is supernatural, and to anyone not related to our Lord Jesus Christ, prayer is apt to look stupid.
Oswald ChambersChristianity is not devotion to work, or to a cause, or a doctrine, but devotion to a Person, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Oswald ChambersThe central point of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ is a personal relationship with Him, not public usefulness to others.
Oswald ChambersIt is by no haphazard chance that in every age men have risen early to pray. The first thing that marks decline in spiritual life is our relationship to the early morning.
Oswald ChambersSatan does not tempt us just to make us do wrong things- he tempts us to make us lose what God has put into us through regeneration, namely, the possibility of being of value to God.
Oswald ChambersIt is better to enter into life maimed but lovely in Godโs sight than to appear lovely to manโs eyes but lame to Godโs.
Oswald ChambersWe always have visions, before a thing is made real. When we realize that although the vision is real, it is not real in us, then is the time that Satan comes in with his temptations, and we are apt to say that it is no use to go on. Instead of the vision becoming real, there has come the valley of humiliation.
Oswald ChambersPatience has the meaning of testing-a thing drawn out and tested, drawn out to the last strand in a strain without breaking, and ending in sheer joy. The strain on a violin string when stretched to the uttermost gives it its strength; and the stronger the strain, the finer is the sound of our life for God, and He never strains more than we are able to bear.
Oswald ChambersOur Lord's conception of discipleship is not that we work for God, but that God works through us.
Oswald ChambersThe great enemy of the life of faith in God is not sin, but the good which is not good enough. The good is always the enemy of the best.
Oswald ChambersWe can never be like lillies in the garden unless we have spent time as bulbs in the dark, totally ignored.
Oswald ChambersFaith is not intelligent understanding, faith is deliberate commitment to a Person where I see no way.
Oswald ChambersA practical help in keeping your personal purity unblemished in your relations with other people is to begin to see them as God does. Say to yourself, โThat man or that woman is perfect in Christ Jesus! That friend or that relative is perfect in Christ Jesus!
Oswald ChambersIf God sees that my spiritual life will be furthered by giving the things for which I ask, then He will give them, but that is not the end of prayer. The end of prayer is that I come to know God Himself.
Oswald ChambersIf Jesus is a teacher only, then all He can do is to tantalize us by erecting a standard we cannot come anywhere near. But if by being born again from above we know Him first as Savior, we know that He did not come to teach us only. He came to make us what He teaches we should be. The Sermon on the Mount is a statement of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is having His way with us.
Oswald ChambersThe Bible does not thrill; the Bible nourishes. Give time to the reading of the Bible and the recreating effect is as real as that of fresh air physically.
Oswald ChambersIt is easier to serve God without a vision, easier to work for God without a call, because then you are not bothered by what God requires; common sense is your guide, veneered over with Christian sentiment. You will be more prosperous and successful, more leisure-hearted, if you never realize the call of God.
Oswald ChambersThe battle of prayer is against two things in the earthlies: wandering thoughts and lack of intimacy with God's character as revealed in His word. Neither can be cured at once, but they can be cured by discipline.
Oswald ChambersRepentance always brings a person to the point of saying, โI have sinned.โ The surest sign that God is at work in his life is when he says that and means it. Anything less is simply sorrow for having made foolish mistakes-a reflex action caused by self-disgust.
Oswald ChambersEarnestness is not by any means everything; it is very often a subtle form of pious pride because it is obsessed with the method and not with the Master.
Oswald ChambersThe whole idea of the prayers of the saints is that God's holiness, God's purpose, God's ways may be brought about irrespective of who comes or goes.
Oswald ChambersGod has frequently to knock the bottom board out of your experience if you are a saint in order to get you into contact with Himself. God wants you to understand this is a life of faith, not a life of sentimental enjoyment of His blessings. ... "Though He slay me yet will I trust Him" - this is the most sublime utterance of faith in the whole of the Bible.
Oswald ChambersJesus Christ demands the same unrestrained, adventurous spirit in those who have placed their trust in Him that the natural man exhibits. If a person is ever going to do anything worthwhile, there will be times when he must risk everything by his leap in the dark.
Oswald ChambersThere is only one relationship that matters, and that is your personal relationship to a personal Redeemer and Lord. Let everything else go, but maintain that at all cost, and God will fulfill His purpose through your life. (This includes meeting the needs of your heart.) One individual life may be of priceless value to God's purposes, and yours may be that life.
Oswald ChambersThe golden rule for understanding spiritually is not intellect, but obedience. If a man wants scientific knowledge, intellectual curiosity is his guide; but if he wants insight into what Jesus Christ teaches, he can only get it by obedience.
Oswald ChambersThe prayer of the feeblest saint who lives in the Spirit and keeps right with God is a terror to Satan. The very powers of darkness are paralyzed by prayer; no spiritualistic seance can succeed in the presence of a humble praying saint. No wonder Satan tries to keep our minds fussy in active work till we cannot think in prayer.
Oswald ChambersThe proof that our relationship is right with God is that we do our best whether we feel inspired or not.
Oswald ChambersWhen you pray, things remain the same, but you begin to be different. The same thing when a man falls in love, his circumstances and conditions remain the same, but he has a sovereign preference in his heart for another person which transfigures everything!
Oswald ChambersForgiveness is the divine miracle of grace. The cost to God was the Cross of Christ.
Oswald ChambersAm I getting nobler, better, more helpful, more humble, as I get older? Am I exhibiting the life that men take knowledge of as having been with Jesus, or am I getting more self-assertive, more deliberately determined to have my own way? It is a great thing to tell yourself the truth.
Oswald ChambersLive in a constant state of expectancy, and leave room for God to come in as He decides.
Oswald ChambersBe persistent with your disturbance until you get face to face with the Lord himself. Don't deify common sense.
Oswald ChambersTo say that 'prayer changes things' is not as close to the truth as saying, 'prayer changes me and then I change things.' God has established things so that prayer, on the basis of redemption, changes the way a person looks at things.
Oswald ChambersDo we not see God at work in our circumstances? Dark times are allowed and come to us through the sovreignty of God. Are we prepared to let God do what He wants with us? Are we prepared to be separated from the outward, evident blessings of God? Until Jesus Christ is truly our Lord, we each have goals of our own which we serve. Our faith is real, but it is not yet permanent. And God is never in a hurry. If we are willing to wait, we will see God pointing out that we have been interested only in his blessings, instead of God Himself.
