The world today doesn't make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?

Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not.

Everyone wants to understand art. Why don't we try to understand the song of a bird? Why do we love the night, the flowers, everything around us, without trying to understand them? But in the case of a painting, people think they have to understand.

There are more copies than originals among people.

Often while reading a book one feels that the author wouold heave preferred to paint rather than to wirte; one can sense the pleasure he derives from describing a landscape or a person, as if he were painting what he is saying, because deep in his heart he would have preferred to use brushes and colors.

Whether he wants it or not, man is the instrument of nature; she imposes on him character and appearance.

If I could say this I wouldn't have to paint.
