Their cultivation is local, as if you should rub a log of dry wood in one spot to produce fire, all the rest remaining cold.

Old & New put their stamp to everything in Nature. The snowflake that is now falling is marked by both. The present moment gives the motion & the color of the flake: Antiquity, its form & properties. All things wear a luster which is the gift of the present & a tarnish of time.

A man must consider what a rich realm he abdicates when he becomes a conformist.

The only gift is a portion of thyself . . . the poet brings his poem; the shepherd his lamb. . . .

The cities drain the country of the best part of its population: the flower of the youth, of both sexes, goes into the towns, andthe country is cultivated by a so much inferior class. The land,--travel a whole day together,--looks poverty-stricken, and the buildings plain and poor.
