As every man is hunted by his own daemon, vexed by his own disease, this checks all his activity.

If speculation tends thus to a terrific unity, in which all things are absorbed, action tends directly back to diversity. The first is the course or gravitation of mind; the second is the power of nature. Nature is manifold. The unity absorbs, and melts or reduces. Nature opens and creates. These two principles reappear and interpenetrate all things, all thought; the one, the many.

Manners aim to facilitate life, to get rid of impediments, and bring the man pure to energize. They aid our dealing and conversation, as a railway aids travelling, by getting rid of all avoidable obstructions of the road, and leaving nothing to be conquered but pure space.

Science is nothing but the finding of analogy, identity, in the most remote parts.

The sermon which I write inquisitive of truth is good a year after, but that which is written because a sermon must be writ is musty the next day.
