I feel like I’ve been saving up a lot of things, and I don’t know what.

A book has got to smell. You have to hold it in your hands and pray to it.

Sometimes you have intuitive insight about how you think things are going to be, and you write that. Other times you fantasize completely, which has nothing to do with predicting the future.

Write a short story every week. It's not possible to write 52 bad short stories in a row.

You can't heave them into categories with labels and say they'll act one way or another. That'd be silly. They're people. People who do things. Yes, that's the way to put it. People who *do* things.

Just write every day of your life. Read intensely.
