As you know, the separation of church and state is not subject to discussion or alteration. Under our Constitution no church or religion can be supported by the U.S. Government. We maintain freedom of religion so that an American can either worship in the church of his choice or choose to go to no church at all.

You know very well that whether you are on page one or page thirty depends on whether they fear you. It's as simple as that.

If we take the route of the permanent handout, the American character will itself be impoverished.

You cannot win a battle in any arena merely by defending yourself.

You want a wife who is intelligent, but not too intelligent.

In the long term we can hope that religion will change the nature of man and reduce conflict. But history is not encouraging in this respect. The bloodiest wars in history have been religious wars.

Politics would be a helluva good business if it weren't for the goddamned people.
