At the time I was arrested I had no idea it would turn into this. It was just a day like any other day. The only thing that made it significant was that the masses of the people joined in.

Have you ever been hurt and the place tries to heal a bit, and you just pull the scar off of it over and over again.

Racial pride and self-dignity were emphasized in my family and community.

I'd see the bus pass every day… But to me, that was a way of life; we had no choice but to accept what was the custom. The bus was among the first ways I realized there was a black world and a white world.

When people made up their minds that they wanted to be free and took action, then there was a change.

I am leaving this legacy to all of you...to bring peace, justice, equality, love and a fulfillment of what our lives should be. Without vision, the people will perish, and without courage and inspiration, dreams will die - the dream of freedom and peace.

Stand for something or you will fall for anything. Today's mighty oak is yesterday's nut that held its ground.
