Every period of life is obliged to borrow its happiness from time to come.

Go into the street, and give one man a lecture on morality, and another a shilling, and see which will respect you most.

The real satisfaction which praise can afford, is when what is repeated aloud agrees with the whispers of conscience, by showing us that we have not endeavored to deserve well in vain.
