The great source of pleasure is variety.

A man used to vicissitudes is not easily dejected.

We have less reason to be surprised or offended when we find others differ from us in opinion, because we very often differ from ourselves.

We are unreasonably desirous to separate the goods of life from those evils which Providence has connected with them, and to catch advantages without paying the price at which they are offered to us. Every man wishes to be rich, but very few have the powers necessary to raise a sudden fortune, either by new discoveries, or by superiority of skill in any necessary employment; and among lower understandings many want the firmness and industry requisite to regular gain and gradual acquisitions.

Truth allows no choice.

Without good humour, learning and bravery can only confer that superiority which swells the heart of the lion in the desert, where he roars without reply, and ravages without resistance. Without good humour virtue may awe by its dignity and amaze by its brightness, but must always be viewed at a distance, and will scarcely gain a friend or attract an imitator.

Let him go abroad to a distant country; let him go to some place where he is not known. Don't let him go to the devil, where he is known.
