I don't think [being monogamous] is a natural instinct for human beings, but it doesn't mean I don't believe in monogamy or true love. I believe in finding a soul mate. Monogamy can be hard work for some people. I don't think it applies to everybody, and I don't think a lot of people can do it.
Scarlett JohanssonI would love to work on Broadway, but I don't know that it would manifest itself in musical theater.... I have terrible stage fright that I'd have to get over.
Scarlett JohanssonI just want to work on things that are really hard, and when I'm not working on things that are really hard, I want to hang out with people I like to be with, and that's it.
Scarlett JohanssonI hope they make a video game of me. At least I wouldn't have any cellulite then.
Scarlett JohanssonI love road trips, I love driving, I love finding little towns. I just think it's the best way to travel.
Scarlett JohanssonIt's important for people to figure out their own lives before involving someone else - to gauge where you are and work on your own issues.
Scarlett JohanssonI try to stay fit and eat healthily, but I am not anxious to starve myself and become unnaturally thin. I don't find that look attractive on women and I don't want to become part of that trend. It's unhealthy and it puts too much pressure on women in general who are being fed this image of the ideal, which it is not.
Scarlett JohanssonActresses get stupid questions asked of them all the time, like, โHow do you stay sexy?โ or โWhatโs your sexiest quality?โ All these ridiculous things you would never ask a man.
Scarlett JohanssonI definitely believe in plastic surgery. I don't want to be an old hag. There's no fun in that.
Scarlett JohanssonI would never knowingly go into a film that I wouldn't pay to see, or something that didn't challenge me.
Scarlett JohanssonClaims have been made that I've been on a strict workout routine regulated by co-stars, whipped into shape by trainers I've never met, eating sprouted grains I can't pronounce and ultimately losing 14 pounds off my 5'3" frame. Losing 14 pounds out of necessity in order to live a healthier life is a huge victory. I'm a petite person to begin with, so the idea of my losing this amount of weight is utter lunacy. If I were to lose 14 pounds, I'd have to part with both arms. And a foot.
Scarlett JohanssonWhether people are in America or in Africa, people want to work. They want to have purpose. They want to provide for themselves and their families. They don't want handouts. They don't want to be completely dependent on their governments - even though there's usually no opportunity for that anyway.
Scarlett JohanssonI can't think of anything I'd rather do less than have to continuously share details of my everyday life.
Scarlett JohanssonYou really hope that people who want to be politically active aren't so disillusioned at this point. I do feel positive about what's happening. I think that with all of these movements, and this growing collective voice that's emerging, people are starting to come out of the kind of dazed state that they were in for so many years. But it's tough to know the best way to effect change now. Campaigning alone no longer seems to be the answer.
Scarlett JohanssonI think it's important for people to be aware of the impact that climate change is having on this huge community of people.
Scarlett JohanssonI don't think there's any kind of preparation for sudden celebrity. I think you almost have this slight nervous breakdown when that kind of media attention happens. I mean, you're doing the same kind of thing that you do all the time, only you have to make these weird adjustments. Like, you're buying a slice of pizza and somebody's outside photographing you which is weird - that's not normal! It's very uncomfortable.
Scarlett JohanssonI'm good with dialect. Some actors do it immediately; other actors never quite get it. It's something I've always really enjoyed and something I've always been pretty fast with.
Scarlett JohanssonMy parents never put a lot of pressure on us to be any kind of way.... I have my funny moments where I look at myself and think, Oh, this is a disaster. But you have to give yourself a reality check and go, All right, if I feel this way, I'm going to do something about it that's healthy. I can't look at somebody who is 6 feet tall and 120 pounds and say, I'm going to get that body. That's just never going to happen. You have to work with what you've got.
Scarlett JohanssonWhen we live our lives everyday, we're met by opportunities, and most of us don't even recognize them.
Scarlett JohanssonFor day-to-day beauty, I'm a Q-tip and Vaseline kind of girl. I never leave home without Q-tips - they're a great fix for any makeup emergencies.
Scarlett JohanssonI am very independent. I can look after myself but I still need a lot of love and care.
Scarlett JohanssonI don't want to be the ingenue anymore. It's nice to be glamorous, but I don't want to always be an object of desire. Because it doesn't last.
Scarlett JohanssonLA's a very hard place to be unless you have people there that love you. It can be very, very lonely, and it can eat you up if you don't take care of yourself. In LA, nobody wants to talk to each other, everybody's giving each other catty looks.
Scarlett JohanssonI don't think about being sexy, being seductive. What you don't want to see is somebody trying to be sexy. That's the most unsexy thing.
Scarlett JohanssonI'm so tired of hearing casting directors ask if I have a sore throat. The people who have told me that my voice is distinctive, it's unusual...those people have always been close to my heart.
Scarlett JohanssonI didn't want to be driving to work everyday and sending out my Starbucks order. I didn't want to be in New York or L.A. I wanted to have space and I wanted to be in a remote place where all of us could just be ourselves and not worry about anyone trying to listen in or get in on that. I wanted to just be comfortable. I feel like being in a big city - as much as I find New York, in particular, very inspiring in a lot of ways - can also be claustrophobic.
Scarlett JohanssonGrowing up I never got into comic books at all. I didn't have any inspiration for it.
Scarlett JohanssonIโm not telling people where to give money, but if there is to be a spotlight shed on me, then Iโd like to direct that spotlight onto causes I think are worthy or onto interesting, progressive figures.
Scarlett JohanssonMy grandmother was also an active member of the tenants association and a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party, and both of my parents were extremely liberal, so I think I grew up in a household that was very politically conscious - we all watched the elections on TV, and we watched the debates. So it was an awareness that we were raised with, and as we grew into young adults, we just naturally became politically active. It was just understood that it was important, that it was our responsibility.
Scarlett JohanssonPeople are fed up - and I think quite rightfully so. But what are they proposing as an alternative to just being upset or feeling disillusioned or abandoned? That kind of protest movement really needs to happen on a much bigger scale, but there needs to be a clearer message.
Scarlett JohanssonIโve never considered myself a femme fatale as Iโve never seduced anyone and ruined their lives. At least as far as I know.
Scarlett JohanssonDifferent things work for different people. One thing I've realized, though, is that the work that I've done on myself outside of my work as an actress has really allowed me to open up my mind. I think I understand my emotional state and my complexities now in a much clearer way, and I can put them to rest in a way that there's almost a catharsis that happens through the work, where I can do it and then find myself again.
Scarlett JohanssonYou have Cameron Crowe write an incredible monologue for you just based on the things that you're talking about. It just became this opportunity that was too exciting a process to pass up.
Scarlett JohanssonI value my privacy and my personal life - and I certainly don't exploit my personal life.
Scarlett JohanssonI'm always surprised that certain actors have Twitter accounts. I guess they use it in a way that works for them. But I'd rather that people had less access to my personal life. If I could keep it that way, I'd be a happy lady.
Scarlett JohanssonI always feel like I have to prove myself as an actor, otherwise you get lazy if you're not slightly terrified that you're going to fail all the time.
Scarlett JohanssonI don't know if I've got swept up. It's so shocking when you hear that Calvin Klein wants you for their new campaign. You're like "who me?". I guess you have to decide where you draw the line between you saying, this is fun, pretty and fabulous, and being over-exposed.
Scarlett JohanssonI don't know necessarily that I would produce under my own company right now. Producing is not something that I'm thinking about. Directing is something that I will be doing very shortly, trying to figure out what to get my hands on. And I can't imagine writing a script and wanting to direct it and not having a producing credit, because I would want to have a big chunk of power on that end, if I wrote something.
