I have started to realize that I am really just a world athlete and a world entertainer -- I am a world-known person, I am a global icon.
Serena WilliamsAll I want is to have fun in what I'm doing every day. I don't want to break records. To become the greatest player ever could take me like...10 more years and I don't think I'll still be playing at 31.
Serena WilliamsI was having an out-of-body experience, it was so hot. I felt I was watching someone play in a blue dress, and it wasn't me.
Serena WilliamsI'm proud to have opened [two] schools in Africa and one in Jamaica [through the Serena Williams Fund and its partners]. I was given a lot. I was given two parents. That's already starting above a lot of kids. And then I was given the opportunity to play tennis and parents who supported that. I feel I can give back.
Serena WilliamsI'm like a chameleon. I can kind of change and get my game going to whatever the situation is. If I play well, which I don't think I've even reached yet at all in this tournament, it's really hard for anyone on the women's tour to beat me.
Serena WilliamsI know a lot of people who are 12 and doing things they shouldnt be doing. Whether youre an actress or a singer, its always the sexier ones that are selling more tickets or selling more albums.
Serena WilliamsWho says that your thirties is when you're supposed to be done? I would like to know who made that rule!
Serena WilliamsI got involved in the design process a long time ago. I've been working with their main designer [Berlei] for a while. It's been really fun all around.
Serena WilliamsI really hope that I can be helpful in that journey because I do believe that women deserve the same pay. We work just as hard as men do. I've been working, playing tennis, since I was three years old. And to be paid less just because of my sex - it doesn't seem fair.
Serena WilliamsI feel like I don't have to win anymore. I've had a wonderful career. Tennis has given me so much, things I would have never expected in my life. I feel honored to even be a part of such a wonderful sport.
Serena WilliamsMy mom taught me how to sew when I was super young; I used to make clothes for my dolls. When I finally went to [fashion design] school [in 1999], I really took to pattern making. Everyone in class was good at something; I was the person, if you need help with your patterns, you come to me and I would help you out.
Serena WilliamsI never left my roots. You can identify me as someone that didn't become high and mighty. Humility is a defining [trait] all of us can forever learn, and I try to be as humble as anyone can be.
Serena WilliamsI never close my mind to anything and eventually want to branch out. But for now, tennis is still number one for me.
Serena WilliamsI'm definitely not at my best. Honestly, I'm under 50 percent. But I've won stuff under 50 percent before.
Serena WilliamsI'm a high-performance athlete: I'm running, I'm sprinting, I'm sliding, I'm doing pretty much everything and the last thing I want to worry about is my chest. I want to just worry about playing the sport at the highest level that I can.
Serena WilliamsI never thought about leaving a tennis legacy. I always thought about leaving a legacy of fulfillment, living out your dreams, and giving back.
Serena WilliamsHopefully, we can build a rivalry and we'll be able to do this a lot. Make a legacy, then retire champions.
Serena WilliamsI am basically a blazer. If I were a clothing item, I would be a legging and a blazer.
Serena WilliamsI would be really excellent in a horror film because I have a great scream. I'd be really good in a comedy too. I'm top, top, top quality.
Serena WilliamsI've had to learn to fight all my life - got to learn to keep smiling. If you smile things will work out.
Serena WilliamsI've almost lost several times but come through that. Being able to play your way through the tournament is really able to help.
Serena WilliamsThere's one thing I'm really good at, and that's hitting the ball over a net, in a box. I'm excellent.
Serena WilliamsGrowing up I wasn't the richest, but I had a rich family in spirit. Standing here with 19 championships is something I never thought would happen. I went on a court just with a ball and a racket and with a hope.
Serena WilliamsI wanted to get really fit. I wanted to lose some weight. So I've been doing Pilates and yoga, trying to lean out my body so I won't be bulky.
Serena WilliamsI'm not one to blame anyone else for anything. And I don't think anyone else should either.
Serena WilliamsVenus [Williams] has an amazing line; I love her collection. I'm always at her office. She has an interior design company and her EleVen company. They have a wonderful office space and I'm always there for the interior part and get to see what she's doing with EleVen.
Serena WilliamsHonestly, I could get in a car accident today and never play tennis again, and then I wouldn't have anything to fall back on. But fortunately enough, I do.
Serena WilliamsI meet people who say, "Girl, I watch every match, and I pray for you." I feel that energy and those prayers. Sometimes when I'm down on the court, in the back of my mind, I'm thinking, "They want me to win. Is there anything else I can give?" It encourages me to do better, to fight harder.
Serena WilliamsI think a smile can make your whole body. Models, they look fabulous, but they don't smile, and they look so mad.
Serena WilliamsI always ask my dad why wasn't I a lefty? Even when I was younger I wanted to be lefty. I could have been really good.
Serena WilliamsWhen you travel so much, the best and most relaxing thing is to just sit on the couch and not move.
Serena WilliamsWill I have to explain to my daughter that her brother is gonna make more money doing the exact same job because he's a man? If they both played sports since they were three years old, they both worked just as hard, but because he's a boy, they're gonna give him more money? Like, how am I gonna explain that to her? In tennis we've had great pioneers that paved the way - including Venus [Williams], who fought so hard for Wimbledon to pay women the same prize money they pay men, and Billie Jean King, who is one of the main reasons Title IX exists.
