Religion belonged to the infancy of humanity. Now that humanity had come of age, it should be left behind.

Man has, as it were, become a kind of prosthetic God. When he puts on all his auxiliary organs, he is truly magnificent; but those organs have not grown on him and they still give him much trouble at times.

Experience teaches that for most people there is a limit beyond which their constitution cannot comply with the demands of civilization.
