There were times . . . when it occurred to me that I was repeating my mother's life. Usually this thought struck me as funny. But if I happened to be tired, or if there were extra bills to pay and no money to pay them with, it seemed awful. I'd think 'This isn't the way our lives are supposed to be going.' Then I'd think 'Half the world has the same idea.

Perfect paranoia is perfect awareness.

My books depend on someone in danger, putting pieces together and figuring things out. They do a lot of thinking, and that gets lost in the movie.

It's hard enough for a person to keep their own socks pulled up, let alone someone else's.

As a rule, I don't worry about genre. I just want to tell a good story, with characters that interest me and my readers.
