In a crisis, the man worth his salt is the man who meets the needs of the situation in whatever way is necessary.

Alike for the nation and the individual, the one indispensable requisite is character.

Toward all other nations, large and small, our attitude must be one of cordial and sincere friendship. We must show not only in our words, but in our deeds, that we are earnestly desirous of securing their good will by acting toward them in a spirit of just and generous recognition of all their rights.

We shall make mistakes; and if we let these mistakes frighten us from our work we shall show ourselves weaklings.

It is not often that a man can make opportunities for himself. But he can put himself in such shape that when or if the opportunities come he is ready.

We must treat each man on his worth and merits as a man. We must see that each is given a square deal, because he is entitled to no more and should receive no less.

Only those are fit to live who do not fear to die and none are fit to die who have shrunk from the joy of life and the duty of life.
