The very first thing an executive must have is a fine memory. Of course it does not follow that a man with a fine memory is necessarily a fine executive. But if he has the memory he has the first qualification, and if he has not the memory nothing else matters.
Thomas A. EdisonNegative results are just what I want. Theyโre just as valuable to me as positive results. I can never find the thing that does the job best until I find the ones that donโt.
Thomas A. EdisonThe real measure of success is the number of experiments that can be crowded into 24 hours.
Thomas A. EdisonIt is very different to make a practical system and to introduce it. A few experiments in the laboratory would prove the practicability of system long before it could be brought into general use. You can take a pipe and put a little coal in it, close it up, heat it and light the gas that comes out of the stem, but that is not introducing gas lighting. I'll bet that if it were discovered to-morrow in New York that gas could be made out of coal it would be at least five years before the system would be in general use.
