Motherhood is the keystone of the arch of matrimonial happiness.

In Europe the object is to make the most of their land, labour being abundant: here it is to make the most of our labour, land being abundant.

Societies exist under three forms sufficiently distinguishable. 1. Without government, as among our Indians. 2. Under governments wherein the will of every one has a just influence, as is the case in England in a slight degree, and in our states, in a great one. 3. It is a government of wolves over sheep.

Books constitute capital. A library book lasts as long as a house, for hundreds of years. It is not, then, an article of mere consumption but fairly of capital, and often in the case of professional men, setting out in life, it is their only capital.

The wisdom of our ages and the blood of our heroes has been devoted to the attainment of trial by jury. It should be the creed of our political faith.

Taxation is, in fact, the most difficult function of government and that against which their citizens are most apt to be refractory.
