I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.

Many are the exercises of power reserved to the States wherein a uniformity of proceeding would be advantageous to all. Such are quarantines, health laws, regulations of the press, banking institutions, training militia, etc., etc.

We owe gratitude to France, justice to England, good will to all, and subservience to none ... it was by the sober sense of our citizens that we were safely and steadily conducted from monarchy to republicanism, and it is by the same agency alone we can be kept from falling back.

Government is being founded on opinion, the opinion of the public, even when it is wrong, ought to be respected to a certain degree.

Almighty God hath created the mind free.
