From such beginnings of governments, what could be expected, but a continual system of war and extortion?

Of all the tyrannies that affect mankind, tyranny in religion is the worst.

The Almighty Lecturer, by displaying the principles of science in the structure of the universe, has invited man to study and to imitation. Society is produced by our wants, and government by wickedness; the former promotes our happiness positively by uniting our affections, the latter negatively by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher.
