Jesus' purpose is not to warm our hearts but to shatter our categories.

The gospel has two parts. It has the part that says you're a sinner, and it has the part that says you're loved and accepted.

Without the gospel we hate ourselves instead of our sin. Without the gospel we’re motivated through all sorts of awful fear and pride to change and it doesn’t really change our hearts; it just restrains our hearts.

To say doctrine doesn't matter, only how you live matters, is itself a doctrine. It's the doctrine of salvation by works.

The two things we all want so desperately — glory and relationship — can coexist only with God.

God loves and defends those with the least economic and social power, and so should we.

To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything. It liberates us from pretense, humbles us out of our self-righteousness, and fortifies us for any difficulty life can throw at us.
