I feel such a creative force in me: I am convinced that there will be a time when, let us say, I will make something good every day , on a regular basis....I am doing my very best to make every effort because I am longing so much to make beautiful things. But beautiful things mean painstaking work, disappointment, and perseverance.

The sight of stars always sets me dreaming just as naively as those black dots on a map set me dreaming of towns and villages. Why should these points of light in the firmament, I wonder, be less accessible than the dark ones on the map of France? We take a train to go to Torascon or Roven and we take death to a star.

In spite of everything, I shall rise again

Do you know what makes the prison disappear? Every deep, genuine affection. Being friends, being brothers, loving, that is what opens the prison, with supreme power, by some magic force. Without these one stays dead. But whenever affection is revived, there life revives.

Don't lose heart if it's very difficult at times, everything will come out all right and nobody can in the beginning do as he wishes.

We have very beautiful bad weather here at present - rain, wind, thunder - but with splendid effects; that's why I like it.

The emotions are sometimes so strong that I work without knowing it. The strokes come like speech.
