You cannot tear up ancient rootages and safely plant the tree of liberty in soil that is not native to it.

The Americans who went to Europe to die are a unique breed.... The Bible is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life, the nature of God and spiritual nature and need of men. It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and salvation.

Only a peace between equals can last. Only a peace the very principle of which is equality and a common participation in a common benefit.

War isn’t declared in the name of God; it is a human affair entirely.

It must be a peace without victory

There is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.
