The political awakening that is happening worldwide is a major challenge for America, because it means that the world is much more restless. It's stirring. It has aspirations which are not easily satisfied. And if America is to lead, it has to relate itself somehow to these new, lively, intense political aspirations, which make our age so different from even the recent past.

I don't feel I was "born American," but my homeland was denied to me after the end of World War II and I craved something I could identify with.

As in all things, it is terribly important to have a sense of priorities in what you do. And to make certain that priorities do not clash.

It certainly would be possible for America to redefine its role in the world, especially if, in the short run, America is able to cope effectively with the ongoing dilemma in the Middle East.
