Most of my music theory knowledge is based on piano. But I write on guitar a lot, too. I'm not a great guitar player by any means. I'm not a great instrumentalist. I play piano on stage. I don't play guitar on stage, but I use it to write quite a lot.

In making a record there are so fewer people involved - at least in our case. There were no more than three or four people in the studio at once. So I really feel like I can stand by everything on the record and say this is something that I personally endorse.

In an ideal world no one would talk before 10am. People would just hug, because waking up is really hard.

I love to play music, and this is fun, and let's record this stuff in a way that we both like. That was exciting enough, so we just recorded it. There was no business in it until the very last minute, really. It was really as much of an extension of me writing the songs in my bedroom as it could possibly be.

That is so personal, and it’s my pet peeve when people press you on it. And it’s always women who get asked! Is anybody saying that to George Clooney?

In a sense, I like to think of the live performance as something different than the record, not necessarily looking to exactly recreate the record. Sometimes Matt and I just do duets folk-style. Part of the fun of seeing a live show is having it be different from the way that you hear it in your bedroom or wherever you listen to music.

I try to be authentic - but at the same time I don't really want people prying into my personal life.
