Eleanor F. Lewis

Eleanor F. Lewis (1882–1961) was an American author and librarian. Born to Methodist missionaries in Chinkiang, China, she returned to the United States for her education, attending Hyde Park High School and the Evanston Academy before enrolling at Northwestern University in 1900. After graduating in 1904, Lewis began a long career at Northwestern University Library, eventually becoming Head of the Reference Department. She retired in 1948.

In addition to her work as a librarian, Lewis was an author. She wrote "Beads of Jade," a memoir of her childhood in China, published in 1958.

She also wrote "The Vengeance of a Tree," a short story that has been included in various horror anthologies.

Lewis was active in the Chi Omega sorority, serving as editor of its publications and as a head resident in women's dormitories. She was also involved in the Bay County Library in Florida, serving on its Board of Trustees and bequeathing funds for a museum room to house her collection of Asian artifacts.

Her contributions to literature and librarianship have been recognized through various collections and archives, including the Eleanor F. Lewis Papers at Northwestern University, which document her life and career.
