I am in favor of a national bank...in favor of the internal improvements system and a high protective tariff.

The Bible says somewhere that we are desperately selfish. I think we would have discovered that fact without the Bible.

But it has so happened in all ages of the world, that some have laboured, and others have, without labour, enjoyed a large proportion of the fruits. This is wrong, and should not continue. I think that if anything can be proved by natural theology, it is that slavery is morally wrong. God gave man a mouth to receive bread, hands to feed it, and his hand has a right to carry bread to his mouth without controversy.
