I was born and have ever remaind [sic] in the most humble walks of life.

If there is anything that links the human to the divine, it is the courage to stand by a principle when everybody else rejects it.

What I do say is, that no man is good enough to govern another man, without that other's consent. I say this is the leading principle - the sheet anchor of American republicanism.

I have never had a feeling, politically, that did not spring from the Declaration of Independence that all should have an equal chance. This is the sentiment embodied in the Declaration of Independence, I would rather be assassinated on this spot than surrender it.

I have stepped out upon this platform that I may see you and that you may see me, and in the arrangement I have the best of the bargain.

Trusting in Him, who can go with me, and remain with you and be every where for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be well. To His care commending you, as I hope in your prayers you will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell.

Such will be a great lesson of peace: teaching men that what they cannot take by an election, neither can they take it by war.
