War is often described as a law of nature-this is not true: Among the lower animals, war is unknown.

These are distressing facts; but do we enjoy life any the less because of them? Most certainly we do not.

Drill and uniforms impose an architecture on the crowd. An army's beautiful. But that's not all; it panders to lower instincts than the aesthetic. The spectacle of human beings reduced to automatism satisfies the lust for power. Looking at mechanized slaves, one fancies oneself a master.

In books, the proportion of exceptional to commonplace people is high; in reality, very low.

The best way to find things out is not to ask questions at all. If you fire off a question, it is like firing off a gun - bang it goes
