I always tried so hard to fit in, and then I figured out that I didn't want to fit.
I knew I could never be accepted as a straight-ahead jazz musician, nor would Iaccept myself as that. I would never be accepted as a minimalist. I wouldn't be adowntown composer. Because I find all orthodoxies, all doctrines to be ultimatelybanal.
I love opera, I love writing for the voice, I love telling stories with music.
Only one music comes out of me.
Time and rhythm are the most important elements in music. If both aren't well conceived, organized, and executed, no amount of notes will make the piece a meaningful artistic experience.
