Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.
Arnold PalmerWhen I was playing in a junior tournament one time, I missed a short putt and threw my putter into the trees. I went on to win the tournament and later, instead of my dad congratulating me, he told me that if I ever threw a club again, I'd never play in another golf tournament. I haven't thrown a club since.
Arnold PalmerI have won the Australian, I won the British, all PGA championships, but I haven't won the PGA championship.
Arnold PalmerWhat do I mean by concentration? I mean focusing totally on the business at hand and commanding your body to do exactly what you want it to do.
Arnold PalmerHad I not become a professional golfer, I think I would have pursued some type of career in aviation.
Arnold PalmerMany people don't know that I experienced a blood clot caused by deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, which is when a blood clot forms in a deep vein in the body, often the leg or thigh. I'm fortunate that my DVT was diagnosed and treated before it led to something even more serious and that's why I encourage people to talk to their doctor if they think something is wrong. I've teamed up with Janssen Pharmaceuticals to raise awareness about blood clot prevention and treatment.
Arnold PalmerWe just became very good friends [with Dwight Eisenhower], we played golf, we played heart exhibitions. Then his doctor said he should not play golf anymore.
Arnold PalmerI think, first of all, I'm very proud of Sam Saunders in general. I am happy to see him playing well and his performance has been good. He is coming on as I hoped he would at this stage of his life.He is a fine young man as well as a fine golfer. He is doing things the right way.
Arnold PalmerI never felt I could be a complete professional without having won the British Open. It was something you had to do to complete your career.
Arnold PalmerI was playing golf in Palm Springs and after a round I asked the waitress in a restaurant to bring me a glass of iced tea and lemonade. A lady sitting nearby heard me and asked the waitress to bring her a "Palmer," too. The name caught on and the beverage quickly spread around the country.
Arnold PalmerThe most rewarding things you do in life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done.
Arnold PalmerI was the first son and first child. When my sister came along, well, she was two years younger, and I had to go to the golf course because my mother couldn't handle all the action going on. So I came with father to the golf course since I was a year and a half old and I spent the day with him here, and it worked in naturally. And it was fun for me being with my father, and doing things that a kid did it was great.
Arnold PalmerWhen you get into competition and get under pressure, and get over that ball and are looking at it, and know you have to hit it, it is having that system to depend on to get that ball to where you want it to be.
Arnold PalmerSam Snead will fly anywhere in my plane with me. Sam's not as worried about the danger as he is about saving money.
Arnold PalmerWhen I was in college, I thought about becoming an attorney. But I wasn't smart enough; I hate being cooped up indoors; and I'm too nice a guy.
Arnold PalmerIf you can concentrate on what you're doing and have the desire to do the things you have to do to win, you'll succeed.
Arnold PalmerI enjoyed the fans thoroughly, and they were always helpful. They were the reason that I tried so hard over the years.
Arnold PalmerI am against making golf courses obsolete, going to the national Open and playing half the holes with a one-iron.
Arnold PalmerI was national amateur champion. I was 24 years old. My father was there, and I couldn't wait to see him, and my mother. I went up and was waiting for all the accolades, and my mom was teary and happy and my dad looked at me and said, "Well, boy, you did good," and that was it.
Arnold PalmerThere's some good news, too, and the good news is that the players [finally] have become more aware of the fact that we [in golf] need sponsors, and we need the good will that is created by the players being, let's say, cooperative with the sponsors - meaning friendly.
Arnold PalmerI remember ones I lost [shot]. I remember the ones I won, but I remember the ones I lost, something that I will never forget. Did it ruin me or hurt my career? It taught me about life, how to take the bad with the good.
Arnold PalmerGolf never ceases to be a challenge, even when it really is just you and the ball out there and nobody else.
Arnold PalmerI was born in 1929, that was the depression, so the golf course was manned by my father and two guys, they worked for my dad and they took me with them everywhere they went. And it was fun.
Arnold PalmerI think I've heard somebody say that I was a well-dressed golfer. I guess that has something to do with the fact that a lot of people who play golf don't dress very well.
Arnold PalmerThe game is so fantastic, and people who get into it love it so much...I'd be pleased with that. There's no game like it.
Arnold PalmerWe have a great field and I'm very happy about that. It's a tough time of year as it gets closer to the Masters, but I'm appreciative of the players who are here, and I'm expecting a great week.
Arnold PalmerAs for 1994 [ U.S. Open], I didn't do very well, but it was a great occasion for me even though I was not playing the way I had hoped. And it was obviously a very emotional day that last day, but it was a great memory for me and I have had a lot of great memories at Oakmont over the years.

Arnold PalmerI'm not much for sitting around and thinking about the past or talking about the past. What does that accomplish?
Arnold PalmerI've noticed the sound of the golf ball being hit by the golf club is different, and much more realistic, with the hearing aids. The sound with the hearing aids makes sense, and better represents what I know is happening to the golf ball. So you could say that the hearing aids help give me confidence regarding my golf game.
Arnold PalmerIt is such a disappointment in American political reaction and actions. When some of our politicians are flying around the country in private airplanes all the time, using public services as their mode of private transportation, and then criticizing us who are in business.
