If I were really asked to define myself, I wouldnโt start with race; I wouldnโt start with blackness; I wouldnโt start with gender; I wouldnโt start with feminism. I would start with stripping down to what fundamentally informs my life, which is that Iโm a seeker on the path. I think of feminism, and I think of anti-racist struggles as part of it. But where I stand spiritually is, steadfastly, on a path about love.
Bell HooksFor me, forgiveness and compassion are always linked: how do we hold people accountable for wrongdoing and yet at the same time remain in touch with their humanity enough to believe in their capacity to be transformed?
Bell HooksWhen I write provocative social and cultural criticism that causes readers to stretch their minds, to think beyond set paradigms, I think of that work as love in action. While it may challenge, disturb and at times even frighten or enrage readers, love is always the place where I begin and end.
Bell HooksI mostly want to remind her of the recipes of healing, and give her my own made-on-the spot remedy for the easing of her pain. I tell her, โGet a pen. Stop crying so you can write this down and start working on it tonight.โ My remedy is long. But the last item on the list says: โWhen you wake up and find yourself living someplace where there is nobody you love and trust, no community, it is time to leave town โ to pack up and go (you can even go tonight). And where you need to go is any place where there are arms that can hold you, that will not let you go.
