Playing Etta James in the movie 'Cadillac Records' really changed me. It was a darker character, and I realized that if anything is too comfortable, I want to run from it. It's no fun being safe.

When I was writing the Destiny's Child songs, it was a big thing to be that young and taking control. And the label at the time didn't know that we were going to be that successful, so they gave us all control. And I got used to it.

Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything?

I'd love to do something dark, something that has nothing to do with music or comedy. Anything, but I'm still learning what I can do.

I felt like God was giving me a chance to assist in a miracle. There is something so relieving about life taking over you like that. You're playing a part in a much bigger show. And that's what life is. It's the greatest show on earth.

I mean, I feel like you get more bees with honey. But that doesn't mean I don't get frustrated in my life.

I've grown so much. I'm more picky about what I'll do,and I'm more of a businesswoman. But at the same time, I take care of myself. All I used to do was work. Now I'm comfortable in my own skin and have a good balance.
