You just don't wake up one day and decide that you need to write songs.

I paint mostly from real life. It has to start with that. Real people, real street scenes, behind the curtain scenes, live models, paintings, photographs, staged setups, architecture, grids, graphic design. Whatever it takes to make it work.

Once I went into songwriting, I figured I had to - I couldn't be a hellfire rock 'n' roller. But I could write hellfire lyrics.

I think of rock 'n' roll as a combination of country blues and swing band music, not Chicago blues, and modern pop.

For whose sake did you live, for whose sake did you die? Forgive me, baby, for what I didn't do.
