The amount of weapons that are available to the United States and the Soviet Union are so bloated, so grossly in excess of what's needed to dissuade the other, that if it weren't so tragic, it would be laughable. What is necessary is to reduce the matches and to clean up the gasoline.

Those afraid of the universe as it really is, those who pretend to nonexistent knowledge and envision a Cosmos centered on human beings will prefer the fleeting comforts of superstition. They avoid rather than confront the world. But those with the courage to explore the weave and structure of the Cosmos, even where it differs profoundly from their wishes and prejudices, will penetrate its deepest mysteries.

In all our searching, the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable is each other.

The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it, but the way those atoms are put together.

Avoidable human misery is more often caused not so much by stupidity as by ignorance, particularly our ignorance about ourselves.
