I do not come into this pulpit hoping that perhaps somebody will of his own free will return to Christ. My hope lies in another quarter. I hope that my Master will lay hold of some of them and say, "You are mine, and you shall be mine. I claim you for myself." My hope arises from the freeness of grace, and not from the freedom of the will.

Neglect of private prayer is the locust which devours the strength of the church.

When you speak of heaven, let your face light up...When you speak of hell well then, your everyday face will do.

God is our portion, Christ our companion, the Spirit our Comforter, Earth our lodge, and Heaven is our home.

The first link between my soul and Christ is not my goodness but my badness, not my merit but my misery, not my riches but my need.

Time is short. Eternity is long. It is only reasonable that this short life be lived in the light of eternity.

If I knew I had 25 years left to live, I would spend 20 of them in preparation.
