When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.

Before Jesus leads His disciples into suffering, humiliation, disgrace, and disdain, He summons them and shows Himself to them as the Lord in God's glory.

Jesus is the only significance. Beside Jesus nothing has any significance. He alone matters.

The time is short. Eternity is long. It is the time of decision.

I saw Pastor Bonhoeffer, before taking off his prison garb, kneeling on the floor praying fervently to his God. I was most deeply moved by the way this lovable man prayed, so devout and so certain that God heard his prayer. At the place of execution, he again said a prayer and then climbed the steps to the gallows, brave and composed. His death ensued in a few seconds. Only the believer obeys — obedience follows faith, the way good fruit comes from a good tree. Only the obedient believe.
