In the highest sense the Bible is to us the unique repository of eternal spiritual truths.

As we peer into society's future, we -- you and I, and our government -- must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.

Science seems ready to confer upon us, as its final gift, the power to erase human life from this planet.

There is no person in this room whose basic rights are not involved in any successful defiance to the carrying out of court orders.

Things have never been more like the way they are today in history.

I never saw a pessimistic general win a battle.

I know something about that war, and I never want to see that history repeated. But, my fellow Americans, it certainly can be repeated if the peace-loving democratic nations again fearfully practice a policy of standing idly by while big aggressors use armed force to conquer the small and weak.
