We don't need to clear the 4 to 6 percent of the Earth's surface remaining in tropical rain forests, with most of the animal and plant species living there.

One planet, one experiment.

America in particular imposes an horrendous burden on the world. We have this wonderful standard of living but it comes at enormous cost.

I like what Abba Eban once said during the 1967 war. He said, "When all else fails, men turn to reason."

When you have seen one ant, one bird, one tree, you have not seen them all.

So, the ant way of life is very ancient and very successful. As far as human beings are concerned, we've been around for only one million years--too soon be sure.

The big question that scientists haven't even begun to get an answer for is how many species of microorganisms are there? Now, this is not stamp collecting. What we need is experts totally devoting their research to everything they can find out about every species, in a community of scientists who appreciate that every fact counts...everything new you learn about any species in any group is worth publishing somewhere.
