What is it that every man seeks? To be secure, to be happy, to do what he pleases without restraint and without compulsion.

It is difficulties that show what men are.

Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions. Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in one word, whatever are not our own actions.

Every difficulty in life presents us with an opportunity to turn inward and to invoke our own submerged inner resources. The trials we endure can and should introduce us to our strengths.

It doesn't take much to lose everything, just a little departure from reason
