Peace, like war, can succeed only where there is a will to enforce it, and where there is available power to enforce it.

For every advance that the Japanese have made since they started their frenzied career of conquest, they have had to pay a very heavy toll in warships, in transports, in planes, and in men. They are feeling the effects of those losses.

No government can help the destinies of people who insist in putting sectional and class consciousness ahead of general weal.

For three long years I have been going up and down this country preaching that government . . . costs too much. I shall not stop that preaching.
