Inner freedom is not guided by our efforts; it comes from seeing what is true.

I have the True Dharma Eye, the Marvelous Mind of Nirvana, the True Form of the Formless, and the Subtle Dharma Gate, independent of words and transmitted beyond doctrine. This I have entrusted to Mahakashyapa.

If one is the master of oneself, one is the resort one can depend on; therefore, one should control oneself of all.

There is no fire like passion: there is no evil and hatred.

There are two things that we should avoid, oh disciple! A life of pleasures, that is low and vain. A life of mortification, that is useless and vain.

The fiercest fire is hatred.

Through zeal, knowledge is gotten; through lack of zeal, knowledge is lost.
