No one can escape death and unhappiness. If people expect only happiness in life, they will be disappointed.
There are two things that we should avoid, oh disciple! A life of pleasures, that is low and vain. A life of mortification, that is useless and vain.
By your own efforts waken yourself, watch yourself. And live joyfully.
Be greatly aware of the present.
You yourself must strive. The Buddhas only point the way.
He whose inflowing thoughts are dried up, who is unattached to food, whose dwelling place is an empty and imageless release - the way of such a person is hard to follow, like the path of birds through the sky.
