I have no designs on society, or nature, or God. I am simply what I am, or I begin to be that. I live in the present. I only remember the past, and anticipate the future. I love to live.

The whole body of what is now called moral or ethical truth existed in the golden age as abstract science. Or, if we prefer, we may say that the laws of Nature are the purest morality.

There is commonly sufficient space about us. Our horizon is never quite at our elbows.

Have no mean hours, but be grateful for every hour, and accept what it brings. The reality will make any sincere record respectable.

Where there is an observatory and a telescope, we expect that any eyes will see new worlds at once.

Men are born to succeed, not to fail.

Yet some can be patriotic who have no self-respect, and sacrifice the greater to the less. They love the soil which makes their graves, but have no sympathy with the spirit which may still animate their clay. Patriotism is a maggot in their heads.
