Everyone is now a potential terrorist.

The alternative position to whether torture is acceptable - that's not an alternative position, that's barbarism. The question here is not whether torture is acceptable or whether it works. It should be simply seen as a war crime. There's no other position on torture.

Students, in particular, now find themselves in a world in which heightened expectations have been replaced by dashed hopes.

A symptomatic example of the way in which violence has saturated everyday life can be seen in the increased acceptance of criminalizing the behavior of young people in public schools. Behaviors that were normally handled by teachers, guidance counselors and school administrators are now dealt with by the police and the criminal justice system.

At the same time, you see in those studies, you see the emergence of various movements among black youth that are really challenging the ideology of neoliberalism since the 1980s.

The new illiteracy is about more than not knowing how to read the book or the word; it is about not knowing how to read the world.

Within neoliberal narratives, youth are mostly defined as a consumer market, a drain on the economy, or stand for trouble.
