It’s better to think of my life like that— part miracle, part madness. It’s better if I accept that I can’t control any of the things that matter. My life is a trail of shipwrecks and set-sails. There are no arrivals, no destinations; there are only sandbanks and shipwreck; then another boat, another tide.

As a writer, if you're prepared to work from your own wound, you're allowing people into the most vulnerable parts of yourself.

Shuttered like a fan no-one suspects your shoulder blades of wings.

People do go back, but they don't survive, because two realities are claiming them at the same time. Such things are too much. You can salt your heart, or kill your heart, or you can choose between the two realities. There is much pain here. Some people think you can have your cake and eat it. The cake goes mouldy and they choke on what's left. Going back after a long time will make you mad, because the people you left behind do not like to think of you changed, will treat you as they always did, accuse you of being indifferent, when you are only different.

There's something about the authenticity rather than the autobiography that makes my story and my pain move across and become your story and your pain.

What can i tell you about the choices we make? Fate reads like the polar opposite of decision, and so much of life reads like fate.

Don’t you, when strangers and friends come to call, straighten the cushions, kick the books under the bed and put away the letter you were writing? How many of us want any of us to see us as we really are? Isn’t the mirror hostile enough?
