As people get older they have these rigid patterns that they impose on themselves, and it kills them. They become dull, they become dead to new experience, they become afraid, biased, and bigoted. It's really simply to do with refusing new experience.

The truth is I am inventing the maybe. I can only make the choices I make, so why torture myself with what I might have done, when all I can handle is what I have done? The Maybe Islands are hostile to human life.

That is what literature offers—a language powerful enough to say how it is. It isn't a hiding place. It is a finding place.

I want to get to the end and feel that I've done all I could, given the limitations and given the opportunities.

It is the nature of walls that they should fall.
