I was never trying to write a hit. I was just trying to write good songs and get a message out, and it was my great good fortune to be popular.

I suppose that's a question most often asked of me by people who would like to make a positive contribution towards a sustainable future and a healthy environment. There are so many things that need to be done that sometimes it seems overwhelming. I try to remind everyone that no one person has to do it all but if each one of us follows our heart and our own inclinations we will find the small things that we can do, and together we will come up with enough to create a sustainable future and a healthy environment.

I got me a fine wife and I got me old fiddle, when the suns coming up I got cakes on the griddle. And life ain't nothing, but a funny, funny riddle.

I think the biggest problem in the world is that we have a generation of young people, and maybe two, who don't think it's going to get any better.

We must begin to make what I call "conscious choices," and to really recognize that we are the same. It's from that place in my heart that I write my songs.

To live on the land we must learn from the ocean, to be true as the tide and free as the wind swell.
