I am grateful to those Members of Congress who worked so diligently to guide the Equal Pay Act through. It is a first step. It affirms our determination that when women enter the labor force they will find equality in their pay envelopes.

We cannot reform the world.... Uncle Sugar is as dangerous a role for us to play as Uncle Shylock.

No responsibility of government is more fundamental than the responsibility of maintaining the highest standard of ethical behavior for those who conduct the public business.

So let us begin anew -- remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate. Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us.

We shall pay any price, bear any burden, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

The only significance of analyzing the past is that it does give us some key to the future.

To those whom much is given, much is expected.
