People don't enjoy salt. They enjoy what is salted. We are the salt of the earth. We do not exist for ourselves.
John PiperThe line of lovelessness is not drawn between speaking and doing, but between speaking and doing in the truth, and speaking and doing in emptiness. Truth turns word-love into deed-love.
John PiperWe can be content with simplicity because the deepest most satisfying delights God gives us through creation are free gifts from nature and from loving relationships with people. After your basic needs are met, accumulated money begins to diminish your capacity for these pleasures rather than increase them. Buying things contributes absolutely nothing to the heart's capacity for joy.
John PiperOut of the freedom from worry that God's generosity provides comes an impulse toward simplicity rather than accumulation.
John PiperThere is a warning. The path of God-exalting joy will cost you your life. Jesus said, โWhoever loses his life for my sake and the gospelโs will save it.โ In other words, it is better to lose your life than to waste it. If you live gladly to make others glad in God, your life will be hard, your risks will be high, and your joy will be full. This is not a book about how to avoid a wounded life, but how to avoid a wasted life. Some of you will die in the service of Christ. That will not be a tragedy. Treasuring life above Christ is a tragedy.
