The presidency has made every man who occupied it, no matter how small, bigger than he was; and no matter how big, not big enough for its demands.

If we must disagree, let's disagree without being disagreeable.

Our society is illuminated by the spiritual insights of the Hebrew prophets. America and Israel have a common love of human freedom, and they have a common faith in a democratic way of life.

We have heard all of our lives how, after the Civil War was over, the South went back to straighten itself out and make a living again. It was for many years a voiceless part of the government. The balance of power moved away from it--to the north and the east. The problems of the north and the east became the big problem of the country and nobody paid much attention to the economic unbalance the South had left as its only choice.

We have the opportunity to move not only toward the rich society and the powerful society, but upward to the Great Society.
