If we are to live together in peace, we must come to know each other better.

Peace does not come just because we wish for it. Peace must be fought for. It must be built stone by stone.

For this is what America is all about. It is the uncrossed desert and the unclimbed ridge. It is the star that is not reached and the harvest that is sleeping in the unplowed ground.

What convinces is conviction.

I shall never forget the faces of the boys and the girls in that little Welhausen Mexican School, and I remember even yet the pain of realizing and knowing then that college was closed to practically every one of those children because they were too poor. And I think it was then that I made up my mind that this nation could never rest while the door to knowledge remained closed to any American.

The noblest search is the search for excellence.
